At just 17, Capucine Delannoy is already a global sensation, seamlessly transitioning her life between the warm vibes of Brazil and the cultural richness of Europe. The young kitesurfing star enjoys the backing of her family, especially her father, who doubles as her kite coach, and her older brother, who is her training partner.
As with any journey to the top, solitude sometimes plays a key role. Capucine reflects on her recent changes, expressing her realization of how solitude allows her to focus better, honing her goals and the paths to them. Winning a world title is euphoric – a sensation she likens to standing atop the world. After securing her first title, the hunger only grew. Before long, she clinched her second title just six months later.
However, triumph isn’t the only facet of her life. Balancing the relentless training with high school and riding massive waves in extreme conditions keeps her on her toes. The unpredictability of the conditions is evident as she narrates waiting for ideal winds during a competition. Not all moments are golden. There are times when despite all the hard work, things don’t go as planned. Coming up short in a competition after having her eyes set on the title can be emotionally draining.
The aftermath of a competition can be stark – while winning thrusts you into limelight and accolades, a loss can be haunting. Yet, even in these challenging times, Capucine holds her head high, showcasing her resilience and determination to the world. She recalls the painful experience of accepting defeat, but also mentions how such setbacks have only ignited her drive further, ensuring she never experiences that low again.
An integral part of her training regime is not just physical but also mental. Engaging in practices such as ice baths and meditation, she’s learned to put her body in stress intentionally, helping her develop resilience and mental fortitude that parallels the pressures of competition. Drawing parallels between ice baths and competition, she speaks about focusing on the moment, on her breathing, to get through the challenging situation.
Capucine’s peers and the kitesurfing community recognize the unique bond she shares with her brothers. They often ride together, each pushing the other, learning and evolving side by side. Yet, the pressure of being a world champion weighs on her. Every day brings with it a whirlwind of self-doubt, introspection, and challenges.
But Capucine’s determination never wavers. Fuelled by her drive to remain at the pinnacle of kitesurfing and to continue pushing her limits, she hopes to inspire other girls to venture into the sport. For her, it’s a perpetual challenge, a constant pursuit of betterment.
As Capucine sails over the waters, she reminds us that while she might be a two-time world champion, the journey is far from over. The young prodigy is geared up for the future, aiming to inspire, conquer, and celebrate the spirit of kitesurfing.
