FAQ
The Mast connects the foilboard to the rest of the Sonar Foil System and controls the ride height above the water. Mast length affects how much clearance you have over chop and waves, how much room you have to heel the board over in turns, and how forgiving the setup feels in different conditions.
A shorter Sonar Mast feels more accessible and easier to control when learning.
A longer Sonar Mast gives more clearance, more carving room and better performance in rougher water.
Mast length depends on your level, discipline, water depth and riding conditions.
Shorter masts (AF55, AF72, CF72) - better for shallow water, learning, prone surf foiling and riders who want a less intimidating ride height.
Medium masts (AF80) - a strong starting point for wingfoil progression.
Longer masts (AF85, CF85, CF95, UHM85, UHM95, UHM105) - give more ride height to clear waves, ride through chop and heel over harder for tighter turns.
Choose shorter for control and shallow water; choose longer for clearance, speed and more advanced riding.
The AF80 Mast is the best starting point for many beginner and progressing wing foilers because it gives a balanced ride height without feeling too extreme. Riders learning in very shallow water or prone surf conditions may prefer a shorter mast such as the AF72. The AF85 can also work for advanced beginners who want more clearance in chop or waves. Beginners should normally start with an aluminium AF Mast before moving into carbon or ultra-high-modulus carbon options.
AF Masts - North's aluminium masts. Durable, more affordable and practical for learning, progression and everyday foiling.
CF Masts - carbon masts, designed to be lighter, stiffer and more direct than aluminium, with more immediate feedback from the foil.
UHM Masts - North's Ultra High Modulus carbon masts, built for maximum stiffness, thinner profile, reduced drag, faster response and higher top-end speed.
Choose AF for durability and value, CF for lighter carbon performance, and UHM for the fastest, stiffest and most refined mast feel.
A shorter mast gives a lower ride height and is easier to manage when learning, riding in shallow water or prone surf foiling. It feels less intimidating because the board is closer to the water and breaches are easier to recover from.
A longer mast gives more clearance over chop and waves, more room to carve, and better control when riding powered or at higher speed.
In simple terms, shorter masts are easier and more forgiving; longer masts are better for performance, rougher water and more advanced riding.
When learning, start with the Mast further back in the DropBox track. This delays lift and gives more control while you get used to the board and foil. As you progress, move the mast forward until your stance feels balanced between both feet.
Moving the mast forward - increases front-foot pressure.
Moving it back - reduces front-foot pressure and can help if the foil feels too powerful or hard to control.
Heavier riders usually need the mast slightly further forward, while lighter riders often ride with the mast slightly further back.
Hydro Thumbscrews are useful if you want faster, tool-free mast mounting and adjustment in the DropBox track. They let you loosen the screws by hand, slide the mast forward or back, and then tighten everything again without needing tools. This is helpful when you are testing mast position, changing between riders, adjusting front-foot pressure or setting up quickly at the beach. They are not required for every rider, but they make mast adjustment much easier.
