FAQ
The Front Wing is the main lifting surface of a foil system. It has the biggest effect on how early the foil lifts, how stable it feels, how fast it rides, how easily it turns and how long it glides.
A larger Sonar Front Wing creates more lift, gets up on foil more easily and gives a more stable ride.
A smaller Sonar Front Wing gives higher speed, quicker turning and a more direct feel, but normally needs more skill and more speed to lift.
Front wing size depends on rider weight, ability level, riding speed and discipline.
More surface area - better for heavier riders, novice riders, lower speeds, easier takeoffs and wider turning arcs. Choose if you want easier lift and more stability.
Less surface area - better for lighter riders, advanced riders, higher speed, tighter turns and a more responsive feel. Choose if you want more speed, sharper response and a more advanced ride.
The Sonar Rider Guide explains this directly: more area means more lift and easier takeoff, while less area means less lift, more speed and a smaller turning radius.
MAv2 Freeride Series - the most versatile all-round front wing family. Larger sizes are best for learning, freeride and progression. Smaller sizes are quicker, more responsive and more suitable for powered riding.
SF Surf Series - made for prone, wing surf, tow-in, wake, parawing and foil drive riders who want effortless pumping and surf-style carving.
HA Speed Series - North's high-performance front wing family for intermediate to advanced riders who want speed, efficiency, direct response and long glide.
DW Downwind Series - built for downwind SUP, wing and parawing riders who need low drag, long glide and control in open-ocean swell.
P Pump Series - made for pump, dockstart and SUP paddle-up riding, where maximum pump duration and low-speed efficiency matter most.
The larger MAv2 Freeride Series front wings are the best North choice for learning to foil. They are designed for wing, boat, wake and learn-to-foil use, with controllable early lift, low stall speed and pitch stability across the speed range.
For many new riders, sizes such as MA1500v2, MA1850v2, MA2100v2 or MA2400v2 Prime make learning easier because they lift earlier and feel more stable at slower speeds. The MA2400v2 Prime is only available as part of the Prime Edition, while MA1200v2 to MA2100v2 are available in both Prime and carbon construction.
The MAv2 Freeride Series is the best North front wing family for freeride and general wing foiling.
Choose larger MAv2 sizes such as MA1500v2, MA1850v2 or MA2100v2 if you want early lift, stability and easier progression.
Choose smaller MAv2 sizes such as MA500v2, MA600v2, MA700v2, MA850v2 or MA1050v2 if you want a quicker, more agile and faster-turning front wing for powered riding, wing surf, kite, boat, wake or tow-in surf.
This makes the MAv2 Series the safest all-round recommendation for riders who want one front wing family that can cover many disciplines.
The HA Speed Series is the best choice for intermediate to advanced kite foilers who want speed, efficiency, direct response and long glide.
Smaller HA sizes such as HA550, HA650, HA750 and HA850 suit faster, more powered kite foiling.
Larger HA sizes such as HA950, HA1050 or HA1150 give more glide and range.
Riders who want a more forgiving all-round kite foil setup can also choose smaller MAv2 Freeride Series wings such as MA700v2, MA850v2 or MA1050v2. These are more versatile and easier to manage than high-speed HA wings, while still giving good control for powered riding.
Choose MAv2 for freeride kite foiling and easier handling. Choose HA for faster, more efficient and more advanced kite foiling.
SF Surf Series - if your priority is surf-style carving, slower-speed glide and effortless pumping in prone, wing surf, tow-in, wake, parawing or foil drive use.
DW Downwind Series - if your priority is downwind SUP, open-ocean swell, longer glide and efficient connection between bumps.
P Pump Series - if your priority is dockstart, flatwater pumping, SUP paddle-up and maximum pump duration.
HA Speed Series - if your priority is high-speed performance, race-style riding, kite foiling, efficient glide and direct response.
Prime Construction - uses pre-preg e-glass from the same moulds as the carbon pre-preg construction. Strong performance, durability and impact resistance at a more accessible price. Available in MA1200v2 to MA2400v2.
Carbon Construction - uses 100% carbon pre-preg for lighter weight and more direct response. Used in the MAv2 Freeride, SF Surf and HA Speed front wings.
High Modulus Carbon Construction - gives maximum stiffness and efficiency. Used in the DW Downwind and P Pump front wings.
Choose Prime for value and durability, Carbon for lighter and more responsive freeride, surf or speed performance, and High Modulus Carbon for maximum glide efficiency in downwind and pump-focused riding.
Upgrade to a smaller or faster Sonar Front Wing when your current wing feels too slow, too stable or too lifty for your riding level. Moving smaller gives more speed, tighter turning, faster response and better control in powered conditions.
Many riders start with a larger MAv2 Freeride wing for early lift and stability, then:
Step down to a smaller MAv2 for more speed and agility.
Move to the HA Speed Series for faster, more efficient riding.
Choose the SF Surf Series for carving and pumping.
Choose the DW Downwind Series for longer glide and downwind efficiency.
