FAQ
The Stabilizer is the rear wing of the Sonar Foil System. While the Front Wing creates most of the lift, the Stabilizer helps keep the foil balanced and controlled. It affects pitch stability, front-foot pressure, turning response, speed and how easy the foil feels to ride.
A larger Sonar Stabilizer gives more stability and more front-foot pressure.
A smaller stabilizer feels faster, looser and more responsive.
The S270 Stabilizer is the best starting point for most beginner and progressing riders.
It is North's go-to all-round stabilizer and is used with most Sonar Front Wings, giving a good balance of stability, control, speed and efficiency.
As riders progress, they can switch to a smaller Freeride Stabilizer, Surf Stabilizer, Speed Stabilizer or Glide Stabilizer depending on whether they want more manoeuvrability, speed, carving or glide.
Freeride Stabilizers (ending in 0 — S210, S270, S320) - the all-round options for balance, speed, efficiency and control.
Glide Stabilizers (ending in 2 — S122, S142, S192) - made for advanced downwind, pump and surf riders who want to cover distance with less effort.
Surf Stabilizers (ending in 5 — S145v2, S185, S215) - made for carving and low-speed turns.
Speed Stabilizers (ending in 8 — S158v2, S178, S208, S238) - flatter, faster and looser for experienced riders or powered conditions.
MAv2 Freeride Series - choose a Freeride Stabilizer such as S210, S270 or S320.
SF Surf Series and P Pump Series - choose a Surf Stabilizer such as S145v2, S185 or S215, or a Glide Stabilizer for more distance and efficiency.
HA Speed Series and smaller MAv2 wings - choose a Speed Stabilizer such as S158v2, S178, S208 or S238.
DW Downwind Series - choose a Glide Stabilizer such as S122, S142 or S192.
The S270 Stabilizer is the main all-round stabilizer and can be used with most Sonar Front Wings.
Choose a larger Sonar Stabilizer if you want more stability, easier control and more front-foot pressure.
This is useful for learning, freeride and riders who want a calmer foil feel.
Choose a smaller Sonar Stabilizer if you want more speed, less front-foot pressure, faster turning and a more responsive ride.
As riders progress to smaller Front Wings, they often also move to a smaller Stabilizer to keep the setup manoeuvrable and balanced.
Stabilizer Shims fine-tune the angle of the stabilizer and change how much front-foot pressure the foil creates.
Positive shim - increases front-foot pressure.
Negative shim - reduces front-foot pressure.
The Sonar Stabilizer Shim Kit lets riders stack shims from -0.5° to +2.5°, so they can adjust the feel of the foil without changing the whole stabilizer. Shimming is useful when you want to tune your stance, control, lift and riding feel for different conditions or personal preference.
